Michigan Hockey Season Ends in Heartbreaking Double Overtime Loss to Denver
The top-seeded Wolverines outshot Denver 52-26 but fell in double overtime, ending their championship hopes in dramatic fashion.

Michigan hockey sensational season came to a crushing end in Las Vegas as the top-seeded Wolverines fell to Denver 4-3 in double overtime during the Frozen Four semifinals, despite outshooting the Pioneers by a staggering 52-26 margin.

The loss marked a heartbreaking repeat of 2022, when Denver also eliminated Michigan in the Frozen Four before going on to capture the national championship. This time, the Wolverines entered as the tournament top seed with legitimate hopes of reaching their first national championship game in 15 years.

Denver came out aggressively from the opening faceoff, controlling territory and keeping the puck in Michigan zone for most of the first period. The Pioneers struck first at 9:29 when a turnover led to a quick shot off a ricochet, putting them ahead 1-0.

Michigan responded with characteristic resilience. Josh Eernisse tied the game at 16:18, scoring off a faceoff with an assist from Kienan Draper. Just 59 seconds later, star forward T.J. Hughes found the net from close range to give the Wolverines a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The second period proved to be a microcosm of the entire contest. Denver quickly tied the game 2-2 at 2:30, scoring immediately after killing off a high-sticking penalty. Michigan dominated the period statistically, outshooting the Pioneers 12-5, but frustration mounted as they could not find the back of the net despite sustained pressure.

The third period remained deadlocked until Michigan finally capitalized on their nation-leading power play. With Denver penalized for cross-checking at 10:14, Jayden Perron slipped a shot through at 11:02 to restore the Wolverine lead at 3-2, assisted by Will Horcoff and Malcolm Spence.

Michigan appeared to be in control, limiting Denver to minimal offensive opportunities while maintaining pressure on the other end. However, with 3:21 remaining, disaster struck. After Asher Barnett lost his stick, the Pioneers managed to even the score at 3-3 with 2:46 left on the clock, forcing overtime.

The first overtime period saw Michigan maintain their shot advantage 6-2, but neither team could find the decisive goal. A late penalty to Will Horcoff for slashing gave Denver a power play opportunity, but the Wolverines killed it off expertly while earning a brief power play of their own as the period expired.

In the second overtime, Michigan continued their offensive dominance, building an 8-1 shot advantage in the extra period and nearly doubling Denver total shot count. Goaltender Jake Ivankovic stood tall with 22 saves, while Denver Johnny Hicks was spectacular with 49 stops to keep his team alive.

Luca Fantilli had several quality chances, while defenseman Schifsky unleashed a slapshot that went underneath Hicks but stayed wide of the net. The Wolverines threw everything at the Denver goal, but they could not solve Hicks.

The cruel ending came when Denver Kent Anderson managed to lift the puck over a ducking Ivankovic, sending the Pioneers to the championship game and ending Michigan season in devastating fashion.

Despite the loss, Michigan showed they belonged on the biggest stage. They controlled play for large stretches and demonstrated the offensive firepower that made them the tournament top seed. Head coach Brandon Naurato team will take solace in their remarkable tournament run, though the memory of this near-miss will linger.

The game lasted nearly four and a half hours, testing the endurance of both teams. For Michigan, it was a season that promised so much but ended in the cruelest fashion possible - dominating statistically but falling just short of their championship dreams.
