Red Wings Center Rasmussen Ruled Out For Season After Blocking Shot
Detroit Red Wings center Michael Rasmussen's difficult season has come to a premature end after the forward suffered another leg injury during Tuesday's 4-3 shootout loss to Columbus Blue Jackets.
Rasmussen left the game in the second period after blocking a shot from Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski during a power play. The impact struck the same area where he had previously been injured, forcing him to miss the entire third period and raising immediate concerns about the severity of the damage.
"Yeah, I think he's probably going to miss a few more games," Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said following the contest. "Again, he blocked the shot basically in the exact same spot, so I don't know if he's starting over or not. But he couldn't return, and I doubt he'll practice tomorrow."
With only four games remaining on Detroit's regular season schedule, the likelihood of Rasmussen returning to action appears virtually impossible. The timing couldn't be worse for both player and team, as the Red Wings continue fighting for playoff positioning in a crowded Eastern Conference.
This marks the third time Rasmussen has landed on the injury list this season, highlighting what has been an injury-plagued campaign for the 25-year-old forward. He previously missed nine games with a lower-body injury after taking a similar shot to the leg, and also sat out three games in November with another ailment.
"You always want to be out there supporting and helping how you can," Rasmussen said earlier in the season during one of his injury absences. "It's hard watching."
When healthy and in the lineup, Rasmussen has struggled to produce offense at his usual rate. The Michigan native has endured a brutal scoring drought, going pointless through his last 25 games and managing just one goal over his past 30 contests.
For the season, Rasmussen has posted modest numbers with six goals, eight assists for 14 points, along with a concerning minus-10 rating across 64 games. These totals represent his lowest offensive production since becoming a full-time NHL player in the 2021-22 season.
Despite his offensive struggles, Rasmussen has maintained his physical presence and defensive contributions. He ranks seventh on the team with 64 hits and leads all Detroit forwards with 63 blocked shots. Even in just 7:57 of ice time during his final game, he registered four blocked shots before his injury.
The loss of Rasmussen adds another challenge to Detroit's playoff push. Selected ninth overall by the Red Wings in the 2017 NHL Draft, he has been a consistent contributor since breaking into the league, making his absence particularly notable during this crucial stretch of the season.
As Detroit looks toward the final weeks of the regular season, they'll need other forwards to step up and fill the void left by Rasmussen's departure. The team's depth will be tested as they aim to secure a playoff berth in what promises to be a tight finish to the Eastern Conference standings.
