Senators Take Control of Playoff Race with Convincing Victory Over Depleted Panthers
Ottawa strengthened their playoff position with a dominant 5-1 victory over a Florida team missing key players due to injuries.

The Ottawa Senators delivered when it mattered most on Thursday night, securing a crucial 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers to solidify their position in the playoff race. For Ottawa, the win marked their fourth victory in five games as they continue their push toward postseason hockey.

The Panthers entered the game severely undermanned, fielding eight players who had recently been playing in the AHL or were headed there before being called up. The injury bug hit hard earlier in the week when both Dmitry Kulikov and Seth Jones went down, leaving Gus Forsling as the only Opening Night defenseman in the lineup.

Despite the makeshift roster that included two defensemen making their NHL debuts, Florida showed characteristic resilience early on. The Panthers have demonstrated remarkable fight throughout what has been a challenging stretch to end the season, and Thursday was no different as they refused to fold despite falling behind.

Ottawa capitalized on an early power play opportunity when Jake Sanderson sent a shot toward the net that Drake Batherson deflected past Panthers netminder Sergei Bobrovsky at 6:49 of the first period. The Senators doubled their advantage late in the opening frame when Fabian Zetterlund unleashed a wrist shot from ten feet out with just three minutes remaining.

The second period belonged to Bobrovsky, who stopped all five shots he faced to keep his team within striking distance at 2-0. The veteran goaltender has been one of few bright spots for Florida during their current four-game losing streak that includes an 0-3-1 record since their victory over Boston last Thursday.

Ottawa pulled away in the third period, with defenseman Artem Zub extending the lead to 3-0 just over three minutes in. The goal came off a loose puck in the right circle that Zub one-timed past Bobrovsky for what proved to be the game-winner.

Florida managed to break Linus Ullmark's shutout bid when Jesper Boqvist finished off a rush play, taking a pass from A.J. Greer and trickling the puck past the Ottawa netminder at 14:17 of the final period. However, the Senators responded quickly to put the game away.

Claude Giroux sealed the victory with an empty-net goal before Zetterlund capped his two-goal performance, scoring from the high slot off a Florida turnover with just over two minutes remaining.

Ullmark, who had struggled in his previous meeting with the Panthers last week when he was pulled after allowing five goals in a 6-3 loss in Sunrise, bounced back with a strong 21-save performance. Bobrovsky made 22 stops in his second consecutive defeat.

The victory was particularly meaningful for Ottawa as other results around the league helped their playoff cause. The Senators now look ahead to continuing their strong play as they make their final push toward the postseason.

For Florida, the loss extends their current skid to four games as they prepare for a Saturday night matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.
