Crawley and Compton Put Kent in Control at Northampton

Zak Crawley made an unbeaten 82 and Ben Compton finished 51 not out as Kent reached 154 without loss against Northamptonshire on the opening day of their County Championship Division Two match at Wantage Road. The ECB Reporters' Network, in a report carried by BBC Sport, said only 36 overs were possible after heavy morning rain delayed the start until 4:15 p.m.

The opening partnership gave second-placed Kent a strong start in a match carrying significant promotion implications. Northamptonshire began the contest in third place, only four points behind Kent, making the head-to-head meeting an important part of a tight race for promotion. The home side won the toss and asked Kent to bat but could not secure a breakthrough before stumps.

Crawley's innings was his second successive Championship half-century and his highest score of the competition this season. He struck 12 fours and one six, reaching 50 from 74 deliveries. His innings included three cover boundaries from Ben Sanderson's second spell and a six off leg-spinner Yuzi Chahal that landed in the upper tier of the Spencer Pavilion.

Northamptonshire created opportunities despite finishing the day without a wicket. Sanderson found movement early and narrowly beat Crawley's bat, while the Kent opener survived a strong leg-before appeal on 16. Chahal also troubled him at times before Crawley used his feet to attack the spinner. Liam Guthrie supplied width for several boundaries as Kent's openers gradually accelerated.

Compton adopted the more watchful role and reached his half-century from 108 balls in the final over. He was dropped on 17 when Nathan McSweeney could not hold a low chance at fourth slip off Sanderson. Compton later survived two strong leg-before appeals from Calvin Harrison before completing his fifty, having collected most of his boundaries when Northamptonshire's bowlers strayed in line or length.

Kent closed with all 10 wickets intact after making full use of the limited play. Crawley and Compton will resume an unbroken 154-run stand when the second day begins, while Northamptonshire must find an early breakthrough to prevent the visitors from building a commanding first-innings total in a match between two leading promotion contenders.
