Xander Schauffele Shoots Brilliant 63 to Take Two-Shot Lead at WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship
The American star carded nine birdies in a bogey-free round at Austin Country Club to distance himself from the field ahead of the weekend rounds.

Xander Schauffele delivered one of the finest rounds of his career on Friday afternoon at Austin Country Club, firing a bogey-free 63 that featured nine birdies to take a commanding two-shot lead heading into the weekend at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship, positioning himself perfectly for his first World Golf Championship victory.

The 30-year-old Californian was in complete command of his ball-striking throughout the second round, hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation while needing just 26 putts on the challenging Austin layout. Schauffele round included four consecutive birdies on the back nine that separated him from a tightly bunched leaderboard and demonstrated the kind of sustained excellence that has made him one of golf most consistent performers.

I felt really dialed in today, especially with my iron play and putting, Schauffele said after signing his scorecard. Austin Country Club is such a demanding test that rewards precision, and I was able to execute my game plan perfectly. Getting into contention at a World Golf Championship is always special, and I am excited about the opportunity ahead this weekend.

The round moves Schauffele to 11-under par for the tournament, two shots clear of defending champion Dustin Johnson and three ahead of rising star Cameron Young. The leaderboard features several major championship winners, but Schauffele superior course management and current form make him the clear favorite heading into Saturday third round.

Schauffele success at Austin Country Club has been built on his exceptional approach play and improved putting stroke, as he has gained significant strokes on the field in both categories through two rounds. His ability to control distance and trajectory with his irons has allowed him to consistently attack pins and create birdie opportunities on a course that demands precision.

The World Golf Championship represents one of the few remaining tournaments that Schauffele has not won during his successful PGA Tour career, and his current position gives him an excellent chance to claim that elusive victory. His combination of major championship experience and current confidence makes him a dangerous front-runner heading into the pressure-packed weekend rounds.

Saturday third round will feature challenging weather conditions, with gusty winds predicted throughout the afternoon that could significantly impact scoring and create opportunities for players to make moves up the leaderboard. Schauffele methodical approach and proven ability to perform in difficult conditions should serve him well.

With a World Golf Championship victory potentially within reach, Schauffele will look to maintain his aggressive mindset while avoiding the mental mistakes that can derail even the most talented players when competing for golf biggest prizes outside of the major championships.
