Balderson Takes Three as Lancashire Edge Rain-Hit Opening Day

George Balderson took three wickets as Lancashire gained a narrow advantage over Gloucestershire on a rain-affected opening day of their County Championship Division Two match at Emirates Old Trafford. BBC Sport reported that the visitors reached stumps on 164-6 after 35 overs were lost to the weather.

Gloucestershire captain James Bracey chose to bat in difficult conditions, but the decision was immediately tested. James Anderson struck with the second ball of the match, having makeshift opener Ed Middleton caught behind for two. Anderson could have added another early wicket, but Ben Walkden dropped Joe Phillips at second slip before rain forced a lengthy interruption after seven overs.

When play resumed after lunch, Balderson changed the shape of the innings with two wickets in three deliveries. He bowled Phillips for eight with a ball that moved back into the batter, then had Ollie Price caught behind for 29. After another spell of showers, Balderson removed Bracey for 21 in the same fashion, leaving Gloucestershire 69-4.

Kamran Dhariwal tried to counterattack at the beginning of the final session, striking Anderson for consecutive boundaries. The former England seamer responded by having Dhariwal caught behind for 20. Anderson finished the day with 2-33 from 19 overs, while Balderson returned 3-35 and moved to 47 Championship wickets for the season, one more than Anderson.

The sixth wicket fell when Balderson's direct hit from mid-on ran out Miles Hammond for 19 as the batter attempted a quick single from Anderson's bowling. At 119-6, Gloucestershire were in danger of being dismissed before the close, but another rain break interrupted Lancashire's momentum.

Daz Ahmed and Sai Kishore then produced an unbroken 45-run partnership to steady the innings in the evening session. Ahmed ended the day as Gloucestershire's leading scorer on 33 not out, with Kishore unbeaten on 20. Their stand left the match more balanced than it had appeared earlier, although Lancashire collected two bowling bonus points while Gloucestershire finished the day without one.
