Somerset Seize County Championship Initiative as Yorkshire Falter

Somerset took firm control of their County Championship Division One match against Glamorgan on a rain-affected opening day, bowling the visitors out for 194 before closing on 92 without loss at Taunton. The Guardian’s day-one report said Somerset made the most of the playing time available while several rival fixtures were curtailed by the weather.

Glamorgan struggled to build a sustained innings, with Ben Kellaway the only batter to pass 50. Somerset’s fielders held seven catches in the slips, while wicketkeeper James Rew completed the other dismissals behind the stumps. Migael Pretorius led the bowling return with three wickets, and Lewis Gregory, Craig Overton and Tom Lammonby each took two.

Somerset then began their reply under lights before conditions improved. Their openers reached 92 without being separated by the close, leaving the hosts 102 runs behind with all 10 first-innings wickets intact. That strong position gave Somerset an early advantage on a day when rain reduced the opportunity for other teams to make comparable progress.

Yorkshire had a far more difficult time at The Oval, ending on 133 for seven against Surrey after slipping to one for three. James Wharton and Matthew Revis rebuilt the innings with an 89-run partnership, scoring 45 and 40 respectively, but Yorkshire then lost four wickets for 21 runs. Jonny Bairstow was among those dismissed during the second collapse, caught at slip by Ollie Pope.

At Chelmsford, Sussex reached 213 for seven after choosing to bat against Essex. Jamie Porter took three for 32 after entering the match as a replacement for Charlie Bennett, who left the field after bowling three overs. Sam Cook also recorded the 500th dismissal of his professional career during the innings.

Elsewhere in Division One, Warwickshire reached 141 for one against Hampshire, while Nottinghamshire closed on 42 without loss against Leicestershire. In Division Two, Kent were dismissed for 238 before Worcestershire reached 80 for two, Middlesex made 139 for three against Lancashire, Durham reached 129 for three at Northamptonshire, and Gloucestershire stumbled to 62 for five against Derbyshire.
