Rory McIlroy Shoots Course Record 62 to Take Three-Shot Lead at Arnold Palmer Invitational
The Northern Irish star's bogey-free round at Bay Hill included 10 birdies and an eagle, setting a new tournament scoring record.

Rory McIlroy produced one of the finest rounds of his career Tuesday, firing a course record 10-under 62 at Bay Hill Club to seize a commanding three-shot lead after the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida.

McIlroy's bogey-free masterpiece featured 10 birdies and an eagle on the par-5 16th hole, where he holed a 40-foot putt that sent the gallery into a frenzy. The four-time major champion looked in complete control of his game, hitting 16 of 18 greens in regulation while needing just 25 putts for the round.

"That's probably one of the best rounds I've ever played," McIlroy said after signing his scorecard. "Everything just clicked today. My iron play was phenomenal, and when you're hitting it that close to the hole, you're going to make putts. To do it at Arnie's place makes it even more special."

The Northern Irishman's brilliant scoring surge moved him to 15-under par for the tournament, three shots ahead of defending champion Scottie Scheffler and rising star Ludvig Åberg. McIlroy's 62 broke the previous tournament record of 63, held jointly by several players including Tiger Woods.

Scheffler remained in contention with a solid 5-under 67, but admitted he was impressed by McIlroy's exceptional play. "Rory was in a different zone today," the world No. 1 said. "When he's playing like that, he's as good as anyone who's ever played the game. It's going to be a fun weekend trying to chase him down."

The record-setting round comes at a perfect time for McIlroy, who has been working tirelessly with his swing coach to rediscover the form that made him one of golf's elite players. His confidence appears to be soaring as he seeks his first PGA Tour victory since 2021.

With ideal weather conditions forecast for the weekend at Bay Hill, McIlroy will look to convert his substantial lead into his 22nd PGA Tour title and first Arnold Palmer Invitational victory. His combination of power, precision, and putting prowess makes him the clear favorite heading into the final two rounds.
