Viktor Hovland Fires 63 to Take Lead at Arnold Palmer Invitational After Second Round
Viktor Hovland turned in the round of his life Tuesday at Bay Hill Club, firing a bogey-free 9-under 63 to surge into the lead after the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida, positioning himself for his first PGA Tour victory of the 2026 season.
The 28-year-old Norwegian was flawless throughout his second round, carding nine birdies while avoiding any mistakes on Arnold Palmer's notoriously challenging layout. Hovland's iron play was particularly impressive, as he consistently found the green in regulation and created numerous scoring opportunities with precise approach shots.
"Everything just clicked today," Hovland said after posting his career-low round at Bay Hill. "I felt comfortable with my swing from the first tee, and when you're hitting it close to the pins like that, you're going to make putts. This course demands precision, and I was able to execute my game plan perfectly."
Hovland's stellar round moved him to 12-under par for the tournament, two shots ahead of defending champion Scottie Scheffler and three ahead of rising star Ludvig Åberg. The Norwegian's 63 matched the second-lowest round ever recorded at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and announced his intention to contend for the title.
Scheffler remained in the hunt with a solid 4-under 68, but admitted he was impressed by Hovland's exceptional play. "Viktor was in a different class today," the world No. 1 said. "When someone shoots 63 around this place, you have to tip your cap. It's going to be a fun battle over the weekend."
The round represents a breakthrough moment for Hovland, who has struggled with consistency this season despite flashing his considerable talent. The former Oklahoma State star has been working extensively with his swing coach to iron out technical issues, and Tuesday's performance suggested those efforts are paying dividends.
With ideal weather conditions forecast for the weekend at Bay Hill, Hovland appears well-positioned to capture his fourth PGA Tour title and first since 2023. His combination of length, accuracy, and putting prowess makes him a formidable frontrunner as the Arnold Palmer Invitational builds toward what promises to be an exciting conclusion on Sunday.
